Our History: "Old School Korean Martial Arts."
The following is a brief history of De Witt Korean Martial Arts.
Master
DeWitt and wife Brenda moved to the Brainerd area during October 1993 and Master
De Witt was
already teaching Tae Kwon Do / Hap Ki Do to a small number of students
in Sedahl Center on the
BRHSC campus. Although Master De Witt continued to
travel to Cambridge for his workouts, to teach Tae Kwon
Do and work with the
boxers at the Cambridge Golden Gloves Boxing club which he also opened and operated.
The
classes at Sedahl Center were becoming more intense and with more students, another
space was needed.
During the spring of 1994, Master De Witt located an empty
building on the corner (1302 Oak St) of
Oak and 13th St in Brainerd and with
the assistance
of Dr.Jeffrey Nyblom - 4th Dahn and Mr. Jerry Lundeen -
1st Dahn, Brainerd
Tae Kwon Do / Hap Ki Do was opened.
Classes were offered four nights per
week, with four classes per evening. There were over one hundred students
involved
in Brainerd Tae Kwon Do. Although either going to high school or to college, Dr.
Jeffrey Nyblom, Dr. Taryn Nyblom
and Mr. Jerry Lundeen were always at Master
De Witt's side, driving to Brainerd and assisting, instructing and promoting
each
and all students in attendance at this new location. Our first Black Belt ranked
student at Brainerd Tae Kwon Do was
Mrs. Cindy Eschenbacher. Mrs.
Eschenbacher was soon joined by more Black Belt ranked students, a few of them
are still with
us, i.e. Master Karmon Keppers and Mr. Todd Dahl.
Brainerd Tae Kwon Do was at this location (1302 Oak St.) for approximately
three years. We than moved to our present location. In 2004, due to bad behaviors
within the community by "other"
martial artists who were never affiliated
with Master De Witt and their inexcusable use of the name Brainerd Tae Kwon Do,
Master De Witt changed the uniforms from white to all black and changed the name
to De Witt Martial Arts.
*August
2009: Although we have had approximately 5000 people try classes at our dojang,
we have had 2,418 people sign
up for our classes since we opened our doors.
Of these 2,418 students, the following have received Black Belt rank.
1.) Fifty-one
(51) Promoted to First Dahn
2.) Twenty-two (22) Promoted to Second Dahn
3.)
Seven (7) Promoted to Third Dahn
4.) Two (2) Promoted to Fourth Dahn
5.)
One (1) Promoted to Fifth Dahn
Our
promotional tests are quite difficult and very, very few have demonstrated the
committment and dedication to obtain
Black Belt rank at our dojang. Many have
tried, few have made this goal. We are always asking students to commit to
being
at De Witt Martial Arts three or four hours per week over a seven day period,
for classes, most will NOT commit.
I highly doubt that many worthwhile goals
can be obtained without this committment or dedication. Our quality of Korean
martial arts is unsurpassed within the Upper Mid-West and if any student at
DMA really wants to obtain the Black Belt rank,
they absolutely MUST put in
their time.
Our
Korean Martial Arts: We are Central Minnesota's only Chung Do Kwan, Hap Ki Do
& Weapons Dojang.
We teach the Korean Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do, Kuk
Sool Hap Ki Do and a weapons curriculum. Master De Witt has an original
Chung
Do Kwan curriculum which was brought by Koreans to the United States in 1962.
In addition to this Chung Do Kwan curriculum,
we have incorportated curriculum
from the W.T.F. (World TaeKwon Do Federation) Tae Geuk Hyungs and from HoShin
Sul Hap Ki Do.
In accordance with the original CDK curriculum, we continue
to teach the Chang Hon Tuls/Forms. These are directly from the
Korea Tae Kwon
Do Association & the International TaeKwon Do Federation curriculums. We work
very hard to have our students
become proficient in the W.T.F. Tae Geuk Hyungs,
I.T.F. Chang Hon Tuls/Forms, Kuk Sool Hap Ki Do, Bong techniques and
forms,
along with Juhl Bong hyungs. As with all of our training, we are known in central
Minnesota for our tough, no nonsense
physical training criteria. There are
very few martial arts schools within the Upper Mid-West which have the continuously
intense
physical training requirments which we have. Old school is just that.
